Shalom Bollywood: The Untold Story Of Indian Cinema - Queen Mary University of London
Event Dates
About this Event
From Danny Ben-Moshe, one of Australia’s leading documentary filmmakers comes a previously unknown tale of how Indian Jews played a formative role in shaping the world’s largest film industry. When Indian cinema began 100 years ago, it was frowned upon for Hindu and Muslim women to perform on screen, so Indian Jewish women took on female lead roles and dominated this space for decades. The film reintroduces us to some of India’s greatest Jewish actors, like Sulochana, Pramila, the unforgettable Nadira and Bollywood’s favourite uncle, David. Infused with music and dance, Ben-Moshe’s engrossing documentary is a rare gem of a story celebrating interfaith coexistence which revisits a fascinating chapter in Indian film history.
Film includes screening of My Great Journey followed by Q&A with Prof. Rosie Thomas, Co-Director of the India Media Centre, University of Westminster and author of Bombay Before Bollywood: Film City Fantasies.
